I wanted to put a basic preps kit in my wife’s car, which being only small (a Citroen DS3) doesn’t have a great usable boot space to begin with without leaving a holdall or rucksack in there permanently.  That combined with the fact that my wife believes prepping to be the work of madmen meant I had to get a little creative to balance my need to have a basic car preps kit available should it be needed with her not really knowing they are there!

There’s a space I noticed our DS3 has and probably quite a few other cars have which is out of sight and quite usable.  Under the floor cover in the boot there is a spare wheel cavity which only has a puncture sealer/compressor kit instead of a a proper spare wheel.

An ideal space under the floor for stashing some preps

This seemed ideal to me to stash some basics in, so I set about putting a car preps kit together.  Rather than create a jumble of items in the space I decided to use some spare pouches to keep like items together.  The space now looks like this:

So what I have in there now is an equipment pouch, a small but decent first aid kit and a couple of bottles of water.  I have since added some energy bars and a bundle of paracord as well.  The equipment pouch contents look like this:

There are three sub-pouches plus a couple of glow sticks and a foldaway rucksack, the idea of which is that should the need arise to have to leave the car and head for home or elsewhere, the kit becomes a simple GHB.  The three pouches are colour coded with paracord zip-pulls as follows with their contents below:

Tool Pouch:
  • Knife
  • Multi-tool
  • Torch
  • Headtorch
Tech Pouch:
  • Spare batteries for torch (plus the other torch I keep in the glove box)
  • Mains USB charger
  • 12V USB charger
  • Charging cable
  • USB charger for 14500 Li-ion Torch Battery
  • I have added a power bar since the photo was taken for immediate phone charging if needed.
Survival Pouch:
  • Disposable ponchos * 2
  • Compressed towels
  • Sewing Kit

Granted calling it a ‘survival’ pouch is way over the top but in conjunction with the first aid kit there are also painkillers, imodium tablets, burn gel and two foil thermal blankets so it’s more ‘first-world survival’!

I think that’s a decent car preps kit to keep in a small car without compromising on space.  It makes use of unused storage and can be all be thrown into the packable rucksack if needed giving a small GHB with water, energy bars, first aid and some basic tools.
